Scrolling

Table of Contents

Introduction

Apps have taken over how human beings interact with one another. It is now virtually impossible to go out and about without seeing people with their faces buried in their phones. Hunched over with poor posture - eyes glued to screens. Children rarely have spots to play, trapped by the blue glow of electronics.

What point is there to learn anything new when you can see whatever you want just a tap or swipe away? What point is there to search for the thing you really want when there is a premade version that can be shipped right to your door in the cheapest, plainest option available? Who needs to be able to write when the apps will write for you?

How else are you supposed to meet anyone if not through an app? How are you supposed to know who to trust? What to do? Where to go? There's an app for that. There's always an app for that. How are you meant to communicate anything or meet anyone if it wasn't for apps?

General Information

Scrolling - the defining feature of smartphones. You can scroll forever (depending on what app you're one). Most of them seem designed to trap you there, moving only one finger as you endlessly scroll up. Its not exactly an activity you can do while multitasking. If you're scrolling, then that is what you are doing. Nothing more, nothing less.

Scrolling is so enticing that it will trap you into thinking that you are being entertained. Sometimes it can be entertaining. You can see what other people are doing. People you've met. People you haven't meet. People you care about. People you don't. Something cute. Something horrific. Something wholesome. Something sexual.

It is always a surprise what you could scroll to next. No real way of knowing. There are so many words on apps, that they can even trick you into thinking that you're reading. But you're not really reading when you're scrolling the apps. You're consuming content. You are learning to recognize shapes and the most basic of patterns. You are not using your brain, you are being primed to shut it off.
