The term ambiamorous describes an uncommon lifestyle. This is not a particular sexual orientation or gender identity, neither is it associated with any particular sexual orientation or gender identity.

General Information

The descriptive term of ambiamorous simply means that the person it is being used to refer to would be happy and fulfilled in either monogamous or polyamorous relationships. Most people prefer one or the other while ambiamorous people are comfortable with either situation.

Reasons for why someone would feel this way vary from person to person. Generally, it is a lifestyle that is associated with those who see the arbitrary nature of social norms. Someone who is ambiamorous may sometimes have one partner and may have at other times multiple partners.

The prefix "ambi-" is derived from the latin word "ambo" meaning "both." The term ambiamorous was coined on on two separate occasions by different people in both 2016 and 2017. While the reasonings were slightly different - the overall intention appears to have been to fill the terminology gap between monogamy and polyamory. Unlike the terms it sits between, ambiamorous describes not a specific type of relationship. It describes a feeling one can have towards relationships.

Ambiamorous Pride Flag

In 2019, the ambiamorous flag was coined and posted to tumblr by user beyond-mogai-pride flags. The flag was based on a redesign of the polyamorous flag. The Greek letter alpha was chosen to represent the letter "a" at the start of the word "ambiamorous."

The α at the center of the ambiamorous flag being white is in reference to monogamy.

There is no confirmed meaning regarding the rest of the colors in the ambiamorous flag. However, seeing as how the colors are based off of those in the polyamorous flag, the colors in the ambiamorous flag can be interpreted as having similar meaning to those in the poly flag.
