Congenital Hyperandrogenism

Table of Contents

General Information

Someone with hyperandrogenism has higher-than-typical levels of testosterone and/or other androgens. In people with XX chromosomes, this can result in the development of secondary sex characteristics that are associated with the influence of testosterone (such as facial and body hair) to varying degrees. Hyperandrogenism may or may not be the result of an intersex variation, though it is common for those with variations such as C.A.H. and PCOS. People with hyperandrogenism that are not intersex will often have may experiences in common with intersex people, such as encountering exclusion and discrminination in contexts where participants are separated by sex; such as in sports.
