The term "umbrella" as used throughout this website is primarily used to refer to "umbrella terms". Umbrella terms are terms which are primarily used to categories lots of other different terms. Sometimes these words can be used on their own. How these terms will be used varies depending on context and/or personal preference.
For example: The word "shapes" is an umbrella term for various shapes. Circles, squares, triangles, and trapezoids are all various shapes. The term "parallelogram" falls underneath the umbrella term of "shapes". Squares and trapezoids both fall under the umbrella term of "paralellogram" and the umbrella term of "shapes". When you look at a rhombus, you may not necessarily say "that is a shape" or "that is a parallelograpm". You are more likely to identify "that is a rhombus".
